Beech
Jasper Morrison's Shop's take on the traditional Portuguese bowl for chopping and catching vegetables, based on examples in the collection of the Museu National de Etnologia in Lisbon. Handmade in Porto in solid beech. To use, one chops on the center nob and collects the chops in the surrounding bowl. Particularly practical when one is chopping herbs to combine. Historically I can imagine the bowl would rest on ones lap, the bowl being an ideal catch-all. It would make sense to use this in a communal atmosphere, during conversation, under some trees in the Minho, and indeed, the original bowls, which you see in the second image, were from the north of Portugal. They are featured in Jasper's book "The Hard Life" published in 2017; it remains an excellent guide to traditional Portuguese objects.
